Because therapy is a powerful resource in the healing process, Lakeshore has physical, occupational and speech therapy service available on-site to both in-patient and community outpatients. Lakeshore’s therapists have extensive experience working with a variety of diagnosis and work with physicians in designing a treatment program to help the patient maintain or restore the highest level of independence.

Physical therapy assists patients in a number of areas including: balance assessments and training, ambulation training, assistive device evaluation and fitting/training orthotics/prosthetics evaluation and training, wound prevention and care, strength training, range of motion, endurance/activity tolerance and transfer and mobility techniques. Our physical therapists are active members of the discharge planning team, allowing a safe transition from the facility if possible.

Occupational therapy evaluates activities of daily living such as dressing, grooming, bathing or cooking. The Occupational Therapist may also assist with positioning needs such as splints or wheelchair accessories. Special exercise programs may be necessary to help improve hand strength, mobility or coordination. Occupational therapy is for individuals with the option to discharge to their previous living environment or an alternative level of care, Lakeshore’s occupational therapists can complete a home safety and environmental safety assessments that facilitate a safe and successful discharge.

Speech therapy services are offered for those clients with difficulty communicating or swallowing. The speech therapy professionals instruct clients in both direct and compensatory strategies for effective communication including; cognition evaluation and education, language comprehension, reading and writing skill training and assistive communication device evaluation and education. The speech therapist is essential in determining a client’s safest diet option such as appropriate food texture and fluid consistency.

Therapy costs are billed separately from the nursing home rate but may be reimbursed under Medicare, HMO, Medical Assistance, private insurance as well as a private pay option. Family members may discuss bill questions with a therapist.
